The Nightingale And The Rose by Oscar Wilde: A book about a nightingale that overhears a youth being told by his love that she would go to the dance with him only if he would get her a red rose. The boy cries for it's the dead of winter and there are no red roses to be found.

3 years agoThe nightingale feels for him, for she sings a lot about love. She searches for red roses and finally a tree tells her that his one, perfect white rose can be transformed if she pierces her heart on its thorn and pours her blood into it. She must sing about love and it must be a full moon. That night at the full moon, the nightingale pierces her heart and as the rose starts reddening, she sings her final and most beautiful song and as the rose is finally finished, she drops dead.

3 years agoThe next day, the youth sees the rose and joyfully plucks it and takes it to his love, but she scoffs at him, saying another boy sent her jewels, and as they were more precious than common roses, she would attend the dance with him. The youth gets hurt and flings the rose out the window, saying, "Love is a foolish thing." and immerses himself in his study books.
