Beautiful Bird Tuesday hosted by Susan Bird. Spix’s Macaw, native to Brazil and popularized in the animated film “Rio,” is a species at great risk, and is close to extinction in the wild due to massive habitat loss. Populations of these birds are maintained on reserves and in aviaries.

1 year agoAbsolutely fabulous coloring on this Spix’s Macaw, Riverbank! Spix’s macaw (aka little blue macaw) was native to Brazil. Twenty years after the species was officially declared extinct in nature, 52 of them arrived in Brazil’s Bahia state for eventual reintroduction back into their native habitat. It is a medium-size parrot (about 11 oz) and is smaller than most large macaws. Thank you for sharing this beautifully colored template and for joining the Beautiful Bird Challenge.
